About Us

The University of Pittsburgh Police Department is the third-largest law enforcement agency in Allegheny County, providing 24-hour protection for more than 40,000 students, faculty, and staff. We cover the 132-acre Pittsburgh campus, along with University Facilities in outlying Pittsburgh neighborhoods, such as the Surplus Warehouse on Thomas Boulevard, and the South Side Sports Complex.

We have 101 commissioned officers, which includes a Motorcycle Unit of 6 Officers, a Bicycle Unit of 6 Officers, a K-9 Unit of 4 Officers (2 are K-9s), and a Special Emergency Response Team. This SERT team is fully equipped to immediately respond to life-threatening events, and has the ability to breach doors of a building if they are blocked by an actor. A Communications Unit of 10, 47 Guards and an administrative staff of 5 also are an integral part of our department.

All Commissioned Officers are certified under state law and receive mandatory training in “rapid response, active shooter” on a regular basis.
