SAFETY BULLETIN

The University of Pittsburgh Police Department would like to remind the community to use proper caution when securing bicycles on campus.  Thieves are known to steal bikes that are not properly secured or secured by ineffective means.

We suggest using thicker “U-Lock” devices rather than chains or cable locking devices.  Chain and cable devices are often quickly defeated by hand held cutting tools that can be easily hidden on a person.

We also suggest registering your bicycle with the University of Pittsburgh, Parking Service at:

http://www.pts.pitt.edu/Commuting/bicycling/bike-registration.php

The registration can help our police officers identify and retrieve important information regarding your bicycle.

Thieves are also known to scout bike racks to look for easy targets with the highest value.  If you observe this suspicious activity, please promptly report it to the police by calling the University of Pittsburgh Police at “412-624-2121.”
